Agriculture Technician, AAS

The new Associate of Applied Science in Agriculture Technician degree prepares graduates for a broad spectrum of opportunities within agriculture technology, equipment repair, and any number of agriculturally related career fields. The core of the program is a solid engineering and industry foundation offered within the STEM and Industrial Technologies Division, coupled with specific agricultural technical courses.

 

Career Outlook

Graduates will be prepared for a variety of entry-level positions in the agricultural sector, such as agriculture equipment technician and precision agriculture technician.

The future of agriculture is technology driven, requiring graduates to be able to analyze, integrate, and act on data collected by agricultural equipment. Today’s agricultural leaders and managers require the ability to take this data and apply it to incorporate advanced technologies - all while keeping a focus on an industry that demands sustainability.

 

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Agriculture Technician program will be able to:

1. Explain the legal and ethical environment impacting agriculture.

2. Analyze different tractor systems’ and implements’ abilities to effectively operate various equipment for agricultural operations.

3. Select appropriate equipment based upon power output needs, field capacity options, and overall performance for various agricultural operations.

4. Apply data collected by precision agriculture equipment, including maps, to variable rate technology and auonomous operation of agriculture equipment.

5. Explain the basic chemical, physical and biological characteristics, and interactions of soils.

6. Discuss equipment calibration and application methods of pest chemicals.

7. Discuss basic soil management, fertility, and nutrient cycling.

8. Apply basic knowledge of agricultural industries and production practices in a practicum setting.
